What to Do in a No Heat Situation
If you find yourself in a ‘No heat’ situation, here are some tips for what to do before calling for service.
If you are not comfortable checking these items, you should call a technician.
Thermostat Check
1.___Is the thermostat set to the HEAT position?
2.___Is the temperature set at least 3 degrees above the current room temperature?
3.___Does the thermostat uses batteries, and are they fully charged?
4.___If the thermostat has a fan switch, is it ON? (If the fan does not come on and there is no air coming out of the register, then there may not be power to the furnace.)
Electrical Panel Check
5.___If the furnace has a breaker, has it been tripped? (If it has, then the switch will be between the ON and OFF positions.) If it has been tripped, it can be reset by switching it all the way OFF and then ON.
6.___If the furnace has a fuse at the panel, has it blown? If so, it should be replaced. WARNING: If the breaker keeps tripping or the fuse keeps blowing, homeowners should call for service.
Furnace Check
7.___Is the furnace’s emergency shut-off ON? (If the furnace has this switch, it will be located near the furnace, at the entrance to the mechanical room or some times near the ceiling at the basement stairs and it looks like a regular light switch.)
8.___Are all access doors and panels to the furnace secured?
9.___If the furnace has a standing pilot light is it lit?
10.__Does the furnace have an adequate fuel supply? (check the Propane tanks if applicable or the main natural gas shut off just below the gas meter outside.)
11.__Is the furnace air filter clean? (It should be checked once a month and cleaned or replaced as required)
12.__If your heating system is direct vented, are the vent pipes outside clear from snow or other objects that could restrict the vent or cause recirculation of the flue products.
